This book was ok, but I stopped reading at p308 as the book was spoiled by the author's choice of a four letter word to describe one of the characters。 Which in my opinion another word could be just as easily used in it's place。 So disappointed。 This book was ok, but I stopped reading at p308 as the book was spoiled by the author's choice of a four letter word to describe one of the characters。 Which in my opinion another word could be just as easily used in it's place。 So disappointed。 。。。more

This is a slow but fairly interesting read, I did wonder, at one point, when the story was going start but I think having read it straight after a very fast paced book I was probably being unfair。

I've grown up reading Catherine Alliott and still remember The Old Girls Network when I first went to college。 She has gone from writing about young people starting out in life to a woman looking after her aging parents。There are actually two stories going on in Behind Closed Doors。 Lucy Palmer is a wife and mother in a loveless marriage。 Suddenly her husband dies after a burglar breaks in and she is free of his cruelty。 Freed from her marriage she contemplates what to do and rather than look af I've grown up reading Catherine Alliott and still remember The Old Girls Network when I first went to college。 She has gone from writing about young people starting out in life to a woman looking after her aging parents。There are actually two stories going on in Behind Closed Doors。 Lucy Palmer is a wife and mother in a loveless marriage。 Suddenly her husband dies after a burglar breaks in and she is free of his cruelty。 Freed from her marriage she contemplates what to do and rather than look after herself for a change decides to decamp to her ageing parents and look after them。 She rents her London house to a professor and drives off to the countryside but her sister in law has other ideas about Lucy moving on and tries some emotional blackmail that has Lucy all a dither imagining the worst。Like any Catherine Alliott book there is a love interest or two。 Dan is the son of her mothers best friend who is also looking after an aging parent so they have lots in common。 The professor renting Lucy's house lectures in criminology and so becomes a confidante as Lucy panics more about what actually happened the day her husband Michael died。Then we have the ageing parents in a large, cold house。 The book started with Lucy and her sister rushing to the house because a neighbour had rung to say they were fighting。 I thought then the book would be about them (which it partly was) but it then went into Lucys' domestic situation。 Her parents like to have lots of friends round for lunchtime dinner parties (mostly drinking) and Lucy frets over them like a mother hen treating them like her kids rather than her parents。 We get a lot of how wonderful Lucy is because she gets their health problems sorted, cooks for them and just generally takes over。 This started to grate a little bit as her parents were not as helpless as she made them out to be and you feel she was just running away and using it as an excuse not to face her own problems。 SPOILERThe ending was so abrupt and considering in the second last chapter Lucy has started writing a new book (she used writing as an escape from her husband during their marriage) in her fathers study and dreaming of living there while her parents live in the newly redecorated lodge。 It just left a lot of unanswered questions。 Will she still live in the country and mind her parents while popping up and down to London or will she abandon her parents, who she considered needed her badly, and move to London again。 She has arranged a meeting with one love interest to break it off but the outcome is left to our imagination。 It is almost as if the wordcount has been met and so we end it here。 。。。more

Behind Closed Doors is an engaging and emotional family drama which is narrated by the central character, Lucy, with flashbacks to past events。 Lucy’s somewhat toxic marriage comes to an abrupt end following the unexpected death of her husband。 A husband who, it is revealed, was both controlling and manipulative and we discover there was more going on in the marriage than meets the eye。 The title ‘Behind Closed Doors’ is a very appropriate one, as no-one knows what goes on behind the scenes。Lucy Behind Closed Doors is an engaging and emotional family drama which is narrated by the central character, Lucy, with flashbacks to past events。 Lucy’s somewhat toxic marriage comes to an abrupt end following the unexpected death of her husband。 A husband who, it is revealed, was both controlling and manipulative and we discover there was more going on in the marriage than meets the eye。 The title ‘Behind Closed Doors’ is a very appropriate one, as no-one knows what goes on behind the scenes。Lucy decides to make a fresh start, she rents out her house and moves to live with her ageing parents who are struggling to cope on their own。 The interactions between Lucy and her parents are so heartwarming and endearing and quite comical at times。 Lucy is a fabulous character and the author really captured her emotions and the turmoil she was going through after her husband’s death and the fact that the events surrounding his death persistently pricked at her conscience。 The storyline is complex and captivating and there are some wonderful twists and I became completely absorbed in the highs and lows of Lucy’s life from beginning to end。This is an emotional and touching novel with great characters and humour。 It’s quite deep at times, but the author has sensitively addressed some of more heavier topics and it is well balanced with some some lovely heartwarming and funny moments。 It is well written and takes the reader through a range of different emotions。 Initially, I wasn’t quite sure what genre this book sits in and anticipated a thriller, a romance or a combination of the two, but what we have is a lovely work of Women’s Fiction following Lucy on her emotional journey and the impact this also had on her family。 Catherine Alliott is a new to me author and I enjoyed her writing style, I will definitely be reaching for more of her work。 。。。more

Possibly the first book I've ever abandoned。 I got a fair way through but could not waste any more of my time on this。 The dialogue is boring and drivel。 It tries to be funny - constantly。 I figured out the plot but it seems it would take forever to get to the point。 The characters - well not one of them did I like or identify with。 Never has a book bored me so much。 Could not finish this。 Possibly the first book I've ever abandoned。 I got a fair way through but could not waste any more of my time on this。 The dialogue is boring and drivel。 It tries to be funny - constantly。 I figured out the plot but it seems it would take forever to get to the point。 The characters - well not one of them did I like or identify with。 Never has a book bored me so much。 Could not finish this。 。。。more

The loss of her lifestyle was bigger fear than living with a bully of a husband? (hide spoiler)] I didn't much care for any of the characters and the writing was average。 I guess some of the situations were meant to be funny but I did not find it so。 Its nice to be reminded about the damage of domestic abuse and bullying but its been done so many times before。If you want a story about mature heroine, read about 80+ people and their health issues, about a wife who's been bullied by her husband for years, then give it a try。["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more

I enjoyed this story very much。 It has a dark side, To outsiders Lucy has it all, a successful career as a writer of cosy mysteries, a wealthy and successful theatre critic husband, a beautiful house in a fairly upmarket area of London。 But for Lucy and her children life is not quite as rosy as it seems。 Michael, her husband is domineering and cruel: he never actually lays a finger on them but his punishments for perceived wrongdoing are harsh - locked in cupboards for hours, adding something to I enjoyed this story very much。 It has a dark side, To outsiders Lucy has it all, a successful career as a writer of cosy mysteries, a wealthy and successful theatre critic husband, a beautiful house in a fairly upmarket area of London。 But for Lucy and her children life is not quite as rosy as it seems。 Michael, her husband is domineering and cruel: he never actually lays a finger on them but his punishments for perceived wrongdoing are harsh - locked in cupboards for hours, adding something to the delicious meal he has cooked them that makes them ill all night, threats that they are all sure would get carried out if they disobey。 His career is sliding too, as his cruelty shows up in his writing, the theatres don’t want him。 Life plods on, the children have grown up and left home so Lucy has to put up with his cruelty and his philandering by herself。 One evening he gets in a towering rage with her, then goes off to meet up with his drinking friends。 Lucy goes to bed, expecting him to continue the yelling when he gets home, but when he does arrive he stomps around downstairs, so she thinks he will probably fall asleep on the sofa in the study。 A while later she is woken by loud shouting and the sound of breaking glass, and she goes downstairs to investigate。 She interrupts a burglar, who runs off when she shouts。 Michael is lying on the floor, bleeding profusely from a head wound, and he only has a faint pulse。 She goes to fetch her phone, but waits a while then tries his pulse, and cannot feel it, so she calls the police, and ambulance。 But Michael is dead by the time they arrive。Lucy’s conscience pricks her, and she needs to escape for a while, so she lets the house to a university professor and goes to stay with her parents in Buckinghamshire。 They both have health problems and are finding it hard to manage, although they wouldn’t dream of admitting it。 The plan is for her to stay in a cottage in the grounds of their house, but it needs a lot of work first, so she moves in with them。 They all pretend it is only temporary。The characters in this story are well- written, you can visualise them all, and the story is very real。 The parents are very social people, they have regular lunch guests, invited so that they can spend the afternoon playing cards。 They sometimes produce some very weird meals, all washed down with extravagant amounts of booze。 There is quite an element of farce, with a serious edge to it of old people trying to cope because they don’t want to ask for help。 Lucy’s life is still rather chaotic, but in a much more pleasant way。 She is sorting herself out, looking to the future。 Then she hears a news flash, the police have arrested someone for Michael’s murder, and her guilt rises to the surface once more。The story gets resolved in a thoughtful way,and it makes you think about right and wrong and how close the line is between the two。 It is quite an emotional story, some of it is very funny, some is sad, and everything in between。 Well worth reading。 。。。more

When does that change become unhealthy? And when is your partner expecting too much? Behind Closed Doors look at all those questions。 As well as how far will you go to protect your family if you made the wrong choice?Reading Behind Closed Doors was my first encounter with Catherine Alliott。 The book is conversational, while you are reading it feels as if you are sitting chatting to Lucy。 She tells you what she is thinking and experiencing, sharing her fears and her excitement from page to page。 The author manages to maintain this conversational theme throughout the book so by the time you reach the last page, it feels like Lucy is a close friend。Lucy has had a troubled life, so when her marriage to Michael suddenly comes to an end, her life is turned upside down。 She decides to leave her London house and move to her parents in the country。 Their house providing a haven when she needs it most, a place where she feels safe。 Soon after settling in, she discovers life is not as smooth as it appears for her parents。 Both in their 80s they are not coping。 Lucy falls into the routine of caring for her parents。 But is that what she wants for the rest of her life? When two prospective men walk into her life she is forced to ask herself if she is ready to let someone in…。 to open herself up after her terrible marriage to Michael。Having older parents myself it was easy to relate to Lucy choice to take care of her parents。 I have experienced so many of the same issues she faced on that front, making her very relatable。 The story entailed so much more though。 Looking at domestic abuse – while not physical – explores how much harm can be done by emotional and verbal abuse。 The amount of doubt and insecurity it can cause。 This book wanders into a much darker place once you find yourself wrapped up in the story。Lucy was a wonderful character。 The author managed to create a realistic woman, with various faces。 We all have different sides to ourselves which help us deal with various situations, these were perfectly shown in this character。 Reading the book, you meet Lucy the wife, Lucy the mother, Lucy the daughter and sister as well as Lucy just trying to find her true self after a long, bad marriage。 Yep, I Loved it。 Mostly because it is quite different from the books I normally read, but I also loved this book because of the fantastic job the author did with her character。 She was extremely detailed, and you see Lucy as a friend by the time you finish the book。This book will keep fans of Woman’s Fiction reading until the early hours of the morning。 Behind Closed Doors is a fabulous tale drifting into the darker side of relationships, family ties and the need to keep up appearances。 Remember to visit the blog: https://featzreviews。com 。。。more

I haven't read as many Catherine Alliott books as I would like but reading Behind Closed Doors reminded me what a fabulous author she is。 Do not let the beautiful cover mislead you into thinking that this will be a slow-paced, gentle read as this compelling, thought-provoking family drama is incredibly difficult to put down。Laced with humour from the start, I tittered and chortled most of my way through the book but make no mistake, there are some very serious elements to the storyline。 Lucy, un I haven't read as many Catherine Alliott books as I would like but reading Behind Closed Doors reminded me what a fabulous author she is。 Do not let the beautiful cover mislead you into thinking that this will be a slow-paced, gentle read as this compelling, thought-provoking family drama is incredibly difficult to put down。Laced with humour from the start, I tittered and chortled most of my way through the book but make no mistake, there are some very serious elements to the storyline。 Lucy, unexpectedly finding herself widowed, moves back home to live with her elderly parents and finds that everything isn't as rosy as they have been painting it。 I think love for our family makes it very difficult to see what is going on right in front of us especially when our loved ones tend to put on a show to hide things from us。I absolutely loved Lucy's parents; their whole day revolves around gin o'clock and it's no wonder these octogenarians are so sprightly as they're practically pickled。 The antics of them and their equally naughty friends provides endless entertainment and I could have read a whole novel just about them。 It makes a lovely contrast to Lucy's story which is cast in shadow following the loss of her husband。Lucy's story is absolutely brilliant and makes the title of the book very apt。 Nobody really knows what goes on behind closed doors and it's frightening to think about what people may be hiding from their friends and family。 We may see things that we think are none of our business but it's made me think that it's perhaps better to be seen as an interfering busybody than to turn a blind eye。 Hugely entertaining and completely compelling, Behind Closed Doors is a wonderfully warm and engaging novel with family at its heart。 I loved it and it's definitely made me want to read more Catherine Alliott books as soon as I can。I received a gifted ARC to read and review for the blog tour; this is my honest and unbiased opinion。 。。。more
